چکیده

[1] Microwave links can be used to estimate the pathaveraged rain rate along the link when precipitation occurs. They take advantage of the near proportionality between the specific attenuation affecting the link signal and the rain rate. This paper deals with the influence of the spatial variability of rainfall along the link on the accuracy of the rainfall estimates. We focus on single-polarization singlefrequency links operating at frequencies ranging from 5 to 50 GHz and with path lengths ranging from 500 m to 30 km. A stochastic simulation framework is used to investigate the frequency at which the linearity occurs (found to be about 30 GHz) for intense Mediterranean precipitation. In addition, the error associated with path-averaged rain rate estimates is being quantified. For instance, the bias is found to be in the order of 15% with an uncertainty of about 10% for microwave links described in the recent literature. Citation: Berne, A., and R. Dynamic rainfall monitoring using microwave links

In this work, we propose a sparsity-exploiting dynamic rainfall monitoring methodology using rain-induced attenuation measurements frommicrowave links. To estimate rainfall field intensity dynamically from a limited number of non-linear measurements, we exploit physical properties of the rainfall such as spatial sparsity and non-negativity along with the dynamics of rainfall intensity. We devel...

In this study, the influence of spatial heterogeneity of rainfall on flood hydrograph prediction in three mountainous catchments in south west of Iran was studied. Two interpolation techniques including Thiessen polygons method and Inverse Distance Weighting method were applied to compare the rainfall patterns of surrounding rain-gages in hydrograph simulation with rainfall patterns of nearest ...

Quantifying Model Output Uncertainty Due to Spatial Variability of Rainfall'

Traditionally in the application of hydrologic/water quality (H/WQ) models, rainfall is assumed to be spatially homogeneous and is considered not to contribute to output uncertainty. The objective of this study was to assess the uncertainty induced in model outputs solely due to rainfall spatial variability. The study was conducted using the AGNPS model and the rainfall pattern captured by a ne...

Most hydrologic/water quality (H/WQ) models that use rainfall as input assume spatial homogeneity of rainfall. Under this assumption this study assesses the variability induced in calibrated model parameters solely due to rainfall spatial variability. The AGNPS model and a network of 17 raingauges were used. Model parameters were estimated using rainfall observed at each gauge location, one at ...

Rainfall measurement from opportunistic use of Earth-space link in Ku band

The present study deals with the development of a low-cost microwave device devoted to the measurement of average rain rates observed along Earth–satellite links, the latter being characterized by a tropospheric path length of a few kilometres. The ground-based power measurements, which are made using the Ku-band television transmissions from several different geostationary satellites, are base...
